In many cultures and religions the crane can have a multitude of different meanings depending on how it is depicted. In both Japan and Korea however, the cranes are a symbol for peace and longevity. They are significant amongst East Asian cultures. As they appear on a regular basis in art, traditional fabrics, and in folklores. They are traditionally known for bringing good luck, wisdom and fertility.
In East Asia, the crane is known to live for a 1000 years, which is why it can be a great gift to wish someone a happy and long marriage. There is also a belief that if you fold 1,000 paper cranes, a wish can be granted.
